MY TOP 5 FAVORITE SONGS

THE MODERN LOVERS - ROADRUNNER - 1972

The very first punk song ever recorded. An anthem of benevolence, boredom, loneliness, and teen angst.

HAMMER DOWN - MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. - 2005

Pure and beautiful. Simply the perfect song.

THE TELEVISION - MARQUEE MOON - 1977

Epic awesome song.

THE CURE - BOYS DON'T CRY - 1979

Sorta changed everything for me.

Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (tunnels) 2005

This recording makes me cry.

Trailer Park Film Faction

I miss my Trailer Park Film Faction today. I made pancakes with chocolate chips, in cold air conditioning, while listening to Sigur Ros - Med Suo I Eyrum... It felt exactly like Wednesday night at 8 o'clock in October 2009. By myself cooking pancakes and waiting for 20 or so early 20s/late teens to fill my trailer and settle in for a good movie that I picked out. Emmet is sleeping on the couch, the sun is going down, neighbors are outside walking around and talking, the skillet smells like butter, the air outside is cold and the heat is slightly on, the place is cleaned, the chairs are all set up, and the stereo is blasting:

In a few minutes Andrew Stanley will show up to help out with the cooking, Keven Widener will help with the dishes, Sarah Ballentine will stand around and laugh funny, Rachel Morris will come in with homework in hand, Jacob Dixon will show up and take over the place, Luke Dixon will walk in with the second half of some crude remark, Spence will come in with a weird mood and not talk at first and then he won't shut up the rest of the night, Liz Serhal will ask what we're going to watch, Jake the Snake will bring a girl and it will be awkward. I will be very happy.

That was the toughest few months of my life and it would have been impossible to get out in one piece without my friends from Kentucky, the film faction.

The Tree of Life pt.2 (SPOILER)

When driving home after seeing The Tree of Life. I was thinking back on what all had happened and was trying to piece together the non-linear 2 hour and 18 minute anti-plot, when my eyes popped open. ...Did I see dinosaurs? Was there not a 15 minute scene including CGI dinosaurs? I couldn't believe what I was seeing at the moment and must have blocked it from my memory as the movie moved on. But I now remember thinking WHY? Why would the purest director, the most reliable director, the most old school of cinematic directors include something that obviously is fake fake fake. It immediately reminded me of Kubrick's 2001. The monkeys... That was sorta silly I guess. But they weren't computer graphics, they were french mimes in gorilla costumes. That's sorta cool. Jurassic Park 5... not cool. Jar Jar Binks...not cool.

In fact... the movie absolutely was 2001. Minus the plot, and with no science fiction, and very Terrence Malick.

This first time through was rough on me. I had far too many expectations and was worried and confused and stressed the whole way through. I need several more viewings. Several!

No doubt though that this movie will be as big of a deal as his other films.

The Tree Of Life according to Roger Ebert

"Many films diminish us. They cheapen us, masturbate our senses, hammer us with shabby thrills, diminish the value of life. Some few films evoke the wonderment of life's experience, and those I consider a form of prayer. Not prayer "to" anyone or anything, but prayer "about" everyone and everything. I believe prayer that makes requests is pointless. What will be, will be. But I value the kind of prayer when you stand at the edge of the sea, or beneath a tree, or smell a flower, or love someone, or do a good thing. Those prayers validate existence and snatch it away from meaningless routine." -Ebert
